Results from our Handbrake and Photoshop multimedia tests were similar; the Pro 11 finished last on the Handbrake encoding test but managed to squeak past the Toshiba Kirabook on the Photoshop test.

Intel's new HD 4400 GPU showed slight improvement over its predecessor, the HD 4000, but not surprisingly, it still can't compete with a discrete graphics solution like the Nvidia GeForce GT 650M. It scored 19 fps on our Alien vs. Predator test at mid-quality, edging out the Toshiba Kirabook by 5 fps. Both systems managed only 5 fps on the high-quality test. The Asus UX51VZ-DH71, with the help of its Nvidia GT 650M card, scored 43 fps at mid-quality and 17 fps at high-quality.

Likewise, the Pro 11 scored 13 fps (mid-quality) and 4 fps (high quality) on our Heaven benchmark tests, beating the Toshiba Kirabook by a single frame on both, but the Asus UX51VZ-DH71 blew them both away with scores of 32 fps and 13 fps, respectively.

Battery life was disappointing; the Pro 11's sealed 4125mAh battery lasted 4 hours 21 minutes on our battery rundown test. Although that beat the Asus UX51VZ-DH71 by around 20 minutes, it pales in comparison to the 7-plus hours we got from the Apple MacBook Pro 13-Inch (Retina Display) and the Toshiba Kirabook's time of 5:50.

Sony has always been big on style, and the VAIO Pro 11 is no exception. It's thin and light carbon fiber body will fit comfortably into a briefcase, carry bag, or backpack, and will withstand the rigors of frequent travel. It's powerful enough for all but the most demanding graphics workload, and its 1080P touch-screen display is a pleasure to use and a beauty to behold. That said, the Macbook Pro 13-Inch (Retina Display) maintains its edge, thanks to its incredible 2,560-by-1,600 display and seven-hour battery life, which is why it remains our Editors' Choice for high-end ultrportables. Our high-end ultrabook Editors' Choice is the Asus Zenbook Prime Touch UX31A-BHI5T ($1,199), and if you can handle the extra pound and a quarter, the UX31A-BH15T is a better buy overall with over six hours of battery life.

Living with the Gateway NE72206u for a few weeks has convinced us that we probably overbought with our past few family PCs. For $499 list (and we've seen it discounted online) you get a huge 17.3-inch HD screen, a quad-core AMD processor backed up by a dedicated AMD Radeon graphics chip, long battery life, and all the modern connectivity you could want.

It's been used for homework, YouTube, Microsoft Office apps, Minecraft, YouTube, and YouTube (yes, we really need to send the kids out to play more). At no point did anyone complain it needed more power. That means the two other laptops here in the rotation—at $800 and $1,100 respectively—were probably more PC than we needed.

Granted, if we had a hardcore gamer or budding filmmaker in the house, the NE72206u wouldn't cut it. Plus, we do like the backlit keyboards and sleek designs of the more expensive machines. But when placing function over form—and budget above both—this laptop could be just right.

The big draw for most buyers will be the Gateway's 17.3-inch screen. While it isn't the best we've seen, it's pretty darn good for a $500 notebook with adapter like eMachines D520 AC adapter, eMachines E730 AC adapter, eMachines G520 AC adapter, Gateway LT1005 AC adapter, Gateway 0220A1990 AC adapter, Gateway ADP-50GB AC adapter, Gateway PA-1650-01 AC adapter, Gateway 0220A1890 AC adapter, Gateway SA70-3105 T4010 AC adapter, Gateway ADP-60DH AC adapter, Gateway Solo 9100 AC adapter, Gateway S7200 AC adapter. The LED-backlit panel is very bright, and the 1,600x900 resolution makes for crisp yet legible text.

Yes, HD purists will wonder why a panel this size isn't full 1080p (1,920x1,080), but we actually prefer the lower resolution—it's high enough to let you have two application windows open side by side, but not so high that text is unreadable without a magnifying glass. And Windows 8 purists (if there is such a thing) will bemoan the absence of a touch screen. Our retort: Yes, touch abilities for easier interaction with the OS and on-screen elements would be nice, but expecting a high-def touch screen at this price is asking a bit much.

As for image quality, the panel delivers bright colors in Windows apps and for images, but we noticed video played via the DVD player didn't pop quite as much. We also noticed motion blur in action scenes and a rather narrow viewing sweet spot for video, which is a shame since the big-screen laptop begs to be shared for movie watching. The viewing angle for Windows apps is much wider.

The Gateway did beat the pack when it came to battery life.

Gateway backs the NE72206u with a basic one-year parts-and-labor warranty, with mail-in or depot drop-off service for warranty issues. That's not great, but is to be expected for a budget laptop. Free phone tech support is available for a year for hardware problems and for 90 days for software issues.

If you're looking for the laptop of a lifetime, the Gateway NE72206u ain't it. But for a basic portable with good enough performance for most tasks and a big screen to get them done on, this notebook is well worth the modest investment.

You've seen products advertised as "often imitated, never duplicated." It's debatable whether the second claim applies to Lenovo's Yoga series of convertible laptops, whose flip-and-fold design has, for all practical purposes, been duplicated by 2-in-1 models from the likes of HP, Dell, and Asus.

But there's something to be said for sticking with the original.

Certainly, no one has made a better multimode portable than Lenovo. The latest midrange Yoga 710 ($799 for the 14-inch model seen here) with adapter such as IBM Thinkpad G40 AC adapter, Lenovo IdeaPad Y550 AC adapter, Lenovo IdeaPad Y710 AC adapter, Lenovo IdeaPad Y730A AC adapter, Lenovo IdeaPad Y450 AC adapter, Lenovo IdeaPad Y530 AC adapter, Lenovo IdeaPad U450 AC adapter, Lenovo 3000 Y510 AC adapter, Lenovo 3000 G430 AC adapter, Lenovo 3000 G550 AC adapter, Lenovo IdeaPad S10 AC adapter, Lenovo IdeaPad S9 AC adapter delivers solid value with a premium design, discrete graphics, and impressive battery life—all while fixing many of the grumbles we had with its Yoga 700$999.99 at Amazon predecessor.

Previously, we'd noted how we disliked the plasticky feel of the chassis and the shallow keyboard travel. Both of these issues are fixed, thanks to a system redesign that introduces a stylish aluminum body and a roomy, comfortable keyboard.

Like the earlier Yoga 700, the Yoga 710—or model 710-14ISK, to give it its full name—has a two-hinge design. The angled, solid hinges aren't as elegant as the full-width "watchband" hinge of the flagship Yoga 900 series, but they give you the same flexibility of positioning the display at any point along its 360-degree arc of travel. As with all Yogas, you can flip the screen fully around and use the system in tablet mode, too.

The Lenovo Yoga 710 we tested sported a 6th-Generation Intel Core i5-6200U—a 2.3GHz dual-core with Hyper-Threading and 2.8GHz turbo speed—along with 8GB of RAM, Nvidia GeForce 940MX discrete graphics, and a 256GB M.2 SSD. The system delivered perky performance in everyday applications, and it held up well against the four other convertibles we chose for our objective benchmarks: the Asus ZenBook Flip UX360CA, the Lenovo Yoga 900S£999.95 at PC World, the Acer Aspire R 14 (R5-471T-52EE)$699.99 at Acer, and the VAIO Z Flip$1,797.48 at Amazon.

Of the bunch, only one—the Acer Aspire R 14—was a 14-inch model, and that machine also happened to be the only one that had the same family CPU as the Yoga 710, just at a slightly faster clock speed (2.4GHz versus 2.3GHz). The rest had 13.3-inch displays. The Asus ZenBook Flip packed a 1.5GHz Core m3-6Y30, and the Lenovo Yoga 900S had a 1.1GHz Core m5-6Y54; the VAIO Z Flip was the hot rod of the group, with a 3.3GHz Intel Core i7-6567U. After fully recharging the laptop, we set up the machine in power-save mode (as opposed to balanced or high-performance mode) and make a few other battery-conserving tweaks in preparation for our unplugged video rundown test. In this test, we loop a video—a locally stored MP4 file containing the full The Lord of the Rings trilogy—with screen brightness set at 50 percent and volume at 100 percent until the system conks out.

All of these 2-in-1 convertibles showed impressive stamina, easily surpassing the eight-hour mark used to signify an average workday. The Yoga 710 lasted for 12 and a quarter hours, close to the class-winning time of the Core M-based Yoga 900S and a significant improvement over the previous-generation Yoga 700, which made it through eight and a half hours.

When all is said and done, the Lenovo Yoga 710 strikes an attractive balance among price, features, and performance, and it does so without compromising on weight or design. While there are other, more portable ultraportables, this 14-inch convertible has the benefits of a larger screen in a footprint not unlike those of typical 13-inch-class notebooks. That convenience, coupled with the multi-angle flexibility of the display, make it a strong value.

The MSI GT70 delivers unique looks and high performance in a package that is slightly less expensive than the Alienware 17.

MSI might not be the first name that comes to mind for most notebook gamers, but MSI has been one of the leading component manufacturers for gaming desktops for years. The MSI GT70 (GT70 2OD-039US) is the latest 17-inch notebook targeting PC gamers who want maximum performance and are willing to sacrifice a little portability to get it. What makes the GT70 particularly interesting (apart from the dragons emblazened on the exterior) is that inside it packs both a quad-core Intel Core i7-4700MQ processor and NVIDIA GeForce GTX 780M graphics for some absolutely stunning performance.

We use Powermark in the “Balanced” mode; running the laptop with a combination of automated web browsing, word processing, video playback, and gaming workloads. This gives gives our readers an easy way to duplicate our findings at home and it pushes laptop manufacturers to deliver better battery life for “real life” use and not just light web browsing with the laptop essentially idle.

The MSI GT70 ran Powermark with adapter like Averatec 1020 90W Ac Adapter, Averatec 5200 90W Ac Adapter, LG P300 90W Ac Adapter, LG M1 Ac Adapter, LG LW60 Ac Adapter, LG R200 Ac Adapter, LG W1 Ac Adapter, MSI M510 Ac Adapter, MSI PR620 Ac Adapter, MSI VR610 Ac Adapter, MSI X480 Ac Adapter, MSI S250 Ac Adapter in Balanced mode for only 1 hour and 3 minutes using the included 9-cell battery. That obviously isn’t very impressive by modern standards, but is close to the average for a 17-inch gaming notebook. Sure, the 9-cell battery inside the GT70 is larger than most laptop batteries, but this is also a larger notebook packed with significantly more hardware. For purposes of comparison we’ve included results from several other gaming PCs that we’ve tested. If we were to use our old battery life test (which basically leaves the laptop idle and refreshing a website every 60 seconds) this laptop would probably deliver around 6 hours of battery life with the screen dimmed and without playing games.

If you’re looking for a well-equipped 17-inch gaming notebook that delivers good bang for your bucks (all $2,699 of them) then the MSI GT70 deserves serious consideration.

This premium configuration of the GT70 has more than enough graphics horsepower for serious gamers. The only time you might find the NVIDIA GeForce GTX 780M graphics lacking is if you demand high frame rates while gaming with high detail settings stretched on multiple monitors … but that’s what desktop PCs are for.

If you want an awesome game play experience and can live with the flaming dragons then the MSI GT70 delivers the goods. The only real complaints we had are the average screen brightness and limited viewing angles combined with poor-to-average battery life for a 17-inch gaming notebook.

The Toshiba CB30-A3120 Chromebook is a 13-inch device designed for web browsing, productivity through Google’s apps and document services, and light media consumption. Like other Chromebooks, it doesn’t run Windows, instead using Google’s ChromeOS, which simply exists to run the Chrome web browser and its associated apps. This new Toshiba model is a few inches larger than the last Chromebook we reviewed (the Acer C720), but will the CB30-A3120 handle the Chrome experience with the same ease as Acer’s smaller model? Read on to find out.

The smooth plastic around the screen, keyboard and bottom is not the most sturdy available, and pressing on the back of the screen and around the edges on the plastic causes noticeable screen rippling. Overall, the machine’s 3.3 lb body feels dense and well-balanced. The A3120 has two vents: one on the bottom in the center, and one at the rear of the machine left of the center. Together they keep the machine running cool overall, and are adequate at dissipating any heat that accrues through very strenuous use.

The non-replaceable 4-cell lithium ion battery in this Chromebook handled quite well when we tested it. Under normal use, with Bluetooth off and at near-maximum brightness, the battery gauge is listed at almost 11 hours at full capacity. To push the battery to its limits, we turned on Bluetooth and simultaneously ran a long, looping YouTube video, two Twitch streams, in addition to a Plex-streamed action movie. When subjected to these conditions, the battery life dropped to 4 hours and 40 minutes. This is not a normal scenario for use, though, and battery life will likely be much better than this for document editing and web browsing. Under typical conditions, it seems that the battery could power 10-11 hours or more of continuous use before being depleted, which speaks to the OS’s lightweight nature.

Overall the Toshiba CB30-A3120 is a good machine for its price point. While its screen doesn’t have the pixel density or richness of a smaller notebook with the same resolution, it isn’t necessarily bad unless you’re comparing it to much higher definition screens, and you won’t find any of those at $300 or less. Finding another 13-inch laptop with an ease of use comparable to this one’s would be difficult, and if you’re looking for a budget ChromeOS experience (possibly for a student) that features a larger screen than the Acer C720, we would recommend giving the A3120 a look.

The Samsung Notebook 7 Spin (Starts at $799.99; $1,199.99 as tested) is an excellent 15-inch midrange 2-in-1 laptop with category-leading performance. In addition to its speed, this system has a sharp display, nice build quality, a generous storage, and good port offerings. That said, it costs $500 more than the Acer Aspire R 14$699.99 at Acer, and the size and weight are not ideal in this design. The R 14 remains our Editors' Choice for its similar feature set and much lower price, but the Notebook 7 is a strong option if you can swing the cost and aren't bothered by an unwieldy convertible laptop.

The body is all-silver aluminum with black keys. It's not the thinnest or lightest system at 0.78 by 14.74 by 10.11 inches (HWD) and 5.01 pounds, but that's not unreasonable for a 15-inch laptop. The Aspire R 14 isn't much thinner, but it is lighter at 0.73 by 13.5 by 9.6 inches and 4.07 pounds, thanks in part to its smaller 14-inch screen. The Notebook 7's weight may make you somewhat hesitant to carry it around or commute with it, though, since you'll definitely be aware of its presence in your bag compared with an ultraportable.

The Notebook 7 is equipped with a 2.5GHz Intel Core i7-6500U processor, 16GB of memory, and (perhaps most surprisingly) an Nvidia GeForce 940MX graphics card, which is far better than the integrated graphics seen in almost every convertible laptop. On the PCMark 8 Work Conventional productivity test, the Notebook 7 scored a category-leading 3,053 points, which translated to quick real-world speeds during my time with the laptop. It also posted among the best results on the multimedia tests, beating out the Aspire R 14 on the HandBrake, CineBench, and Photoshop tests. None of the aforementioned laptops were faster on HandBrake or scored higher on CineBench, and only the Spectre x360 15t beat the Notebook 7's Photoshop time.

The Samsung Notebook 7 Spin is a very well-made convertible laptop with a sharp, vibrant display, a nice build, and the fastest performance in the category. Its quick speeds and valuable set of features make it useful for getting real work done, or for entertainment. The 15-inch size, though, is a bit awkward, and it's the heaviest of these convertible laptops—portability is not a strong suit, but it will serve you well at home. It's reasonably priced for what it offers, but the Acer Aspire R 14 includes many of the same features and equivalent battery life for just $700. The Notebook 7 is all around faster, but that $500 price difference is certainly nothing to ignore, and the R 14's size is a little more appealing for this type of system. As such, the R 14 remains our Editors' Choice midrange convertible laptop, but the Samsung Notebook 7 Spin is an attractive PC if you don't mind the added price and size.

The ideal midrange gaming laptop is one that has a price below what you see from the realm of high-end systems, but still delivers on power. The HP Omen 17 (starts at $1,299; $1,799 as tested) hits the target in that regard, priced several hundred dollars less than the competition while offering similar—and, in some cases, better—performance. It also boasts a 4K display, unlike many more expensive laptops, and for this advantage and its great value proposition, it replaces the more expensive 15-inch MSI GT62VR Dominator Pro-005$1,798.99 at Amazon as our midrange Editors' Choice.

The Omen 17 with adapter such as HP Pavilion DM3 AC Adapter, HP Pavilion DV1000 AC Adapter, HP Pavilion DV4000 AC Adapter, HP Pavilion DV5000 AC Adapter, HP Pavilion DV6000 AC Adapter, HP Pavilion DV8000 AC Adapter, HP Pavilion ZE4900 AC Adapter, HP Pavilion ZT3000 AC Adapter, HP TouchSmart TX2 AC Adapter, HP DC895A AC Adapter, HP EG410AA AC Adapter, HP EH642A AC Adapter is a wide, but relatively slim laptop for its 17-inch size. It measures 1.2 by 16.3 by 11.0 inches (HWD) and weighs 6.3 pounds, making it slimmer and lighter than the Lenovo Ideapad Y900-17 (1.4 by 16.7 by 12.4 inches, 9.7 pounds) but close to the Gigabyte P37X v6 (0.9 by 16.4 by 11.3 inches, 6.5 pounds). Part of what contributes to the Omen's lower weight is its all-plastic body—probably the biggest caveat I have, but not too much of a downside unless you really like aluminum bodies. HP did a nice job with the chassis, and it feels and looks good. The color is an interesting patterned black with a bluish hue on the lid, and the shiny red Omen logo is appealing.

Equipped with a 2.6GHz Intel Core i7-6700HQ processor, 16GB of memory, and new Nvidia GeForce GTX 1070 graphics, the Omen 17 offers a lot of power for the price. On the PCMark 8 Work Conventional productivity test it scores 2,729 points, though it's worth noting this score takes a hit from the demands of the 4K resolution. The Dominator Pro-005 scores 3,355 and the Ideapad Y900-17 scores 3,711—both systems are more expensive, and neither runs at 4K. (The Gigabyte P37X v6, with a 4K screen, turns out a comparable score of 2,783.) The multimedia scores favor the Omen 17 overall, with times of 1 minute, 6 seconds on Handbrake and 3:06 on Photoshop, and a score of 678 on CineBench. Of the three laptops previously mentioned, only the Dominator Pro's Handbrake time is faster—each result on the other laptops falls behind the Omen 17's.

For a very reasonable price given the 4K display and the GTX 1070, the HP Omen 17 is an attractive proposition. Its performance is on par with or better than you'll see from midrange gaming laptops that cost more, many of which can't match its resolution. It also offers a lot of storage, a good selection of ports, and quality speakers. The only real concession is the plastic body, especially if an aluminum build is important to you, but the design is pleasant and it doesn't feel cheap. The MSI Dominator Pro-005 is also powerful, but more expensive, and the screen is smaller and only 1080p. At the midrange price tier, where bang for your buck plays a pivotal role, the HP Omen 17 is a superior option and our new Editors' Choice.

Also, its size is closer to a hefty laptop than a portable tablet PC. However, the large screen makes this device ideal for both watching movies on the go and participating in business meetings or conferences from afar. This device constitutes a solid tablet PC that's better than any other on the market.

Editors' Note: The version of the Alienware 13 review had a bug that prevented screen dimming, which didn't allow us to properly run our battery test. We will update this review once that issue is resolved.

I was surprised to see that Alienware equipped the 13 with a 2.5-GHz Intel Core i7-6500U processor with 8GB of RAM, instead of the speedier 2.6-GHz Intel Core i7-6700HQ CPU I've grown accustomed to seeing on competing laptops. However, the Alienware 13 can juggle multiple tasks with ease, streaming an episode Gunslinger Girl while running a system scan with 10 additional tabs open in Google Chrome.

The Alienware 13 stumbled a bit when we ran our synthetic benchmarks. For example, it notched only 6,816 on Geekbench 3, missing the 7,531 mainstream average. Both the Nitro Black and GL552 outdid that, with 12,577 and 13,554, respectively.

If you've been using a regular display for your laptop gaming and entertainment, I'm here to tell you that you're doing it wrong. The $1,299 Alienware 13's OLED screen is a vibrant revelation of where gaming notebooks are going. But once I stopped peering into the panel trying to see my future, there was the rest of the notebook to consider.

While I would love for Alienware to outfit this baby with beefier Nvidia GeForce GTX 970M graphics, the 965M is a powerhouse in its own right. The speakers and colorful keyboard also impress. I just wish the bottom of this rig ran cooler.

The only other thing I would change about the system is the processor. I want a beast whether I'm gaming or writing a review. Overall, though, the Alienware 13 is a great choice for gamers who want an unparalleled viewing experience for a midlevel price.

This workstation can get some serious work done, but its battery life of 5 hours and 34 minutes means you likely won't be taking it far from your desk. And it with the adapter like Dell XPS M1210 AC Adapter, Dell Precision M70 AC Adapter, Dell XPS M1530 AC Adapter, Dell Precision M2400 AC Adapter, Dell Vostro A860 AC Adapter, Dell XPS M1410 AC Adapter, Dell inspiron 1210 AC Adapter, Dell inspiron 910 AC Adapter, Dell Inspiron Mini 12 AC Adapter, Dell Vostro 3600 AC Adapter, Dell smartstep 250N AC Adapter.

That time is higher than the category average of 4:30 and the MSI WS60 Workstation's paltry 3:05, but it falls way short of the Lenovo W550s, which lasted a whopping 15:52 on a charge with its extended battery.

Our $2,603 review configuration of the Dell Precision 5510 came tricked out with an Intel Core Xeon E3-1505M processor, an Nvidia Quadro M1000M graphics card with 2GB of video RAM, a 3840 x 2160 ultra-HD touch screen, a 512GB PCIe SSD and 16GB of RAM. It costs $2,603 as reviewed, but there are multiple configurations to choose from, and they won't all perform as well as our tricked-out setup.

The $1,399 base configuration comes with a Core i5-6300HQ processor; 8GB of RAM; an Nvidia Quadro M1000M GPU with 2GB of graphics memory; and a 500GB, 7,200-rpm hard drive. It comes with a 15.6-inch 1920 x 1080 full-HD display and a three-cell (56Wh) battery that will almost certainly require a charger nearby.

There is also an option for a Core i7-6820HQ processor, along with hard drives in a variety of sizes. You can get a 500GB or 1TB hard drive, SATA solid-state drives between 256GB and 512GB, and PCIe SSDs between 256GB and 1TB.

Dell's Precision 5510 is a premium 15-inch workstation that offers powerful performance, an eye-popping ultra-HD screen and an attractive, lightweight body. If you don't need the power of a workstation but still want a 15-inch computer with the beauty of the Precision 5510, check out the Dell XPS 15, which is almost exactly the same on the outside but offers better battery life. However, if you want to do professional 3D work or high-end calculations on the go, the Precision 5510 is hard to beat.

The UX305's design is an exercise in simplicity; there isn't a single unnecessary protuberance, and its lines and curves flow from edge to edge with an elegant fluidity. Finished in dark obsidian stone, the UX305 continues the ZenBook tradition by featuring a gorgeous aluminum body and a delicately thin waistline.

Inside, the aluminum deck is complemented by a black Chiclet-style keyboard and spacious one-piece touchpad. With its fanless design, the bottom of the UX305 is completely smooth and unbroken, except for the stereo speaker grilles on either side and four rubber feet.

Our sample $699 UX305FA model came with a 13-inch 1920 x 1080-pixel matte display, an Intel Core M 5Y10 CPU, 8GB of RAM and a 256GB SSD. There's an upcoming QHD+ model featuring a glossy 3200 x 1800p touch screen for $999, but it won't be available until April.

Currently, the Microsoft Store is offering a $60 student discount on the UX305, which brings the price down to an even more attractive $639.

2015 is the year of the 2-in-1. Traditional-tablet sales are on the decline -- why should users looking for a new laptop buy a system with a limited design when a convertible does it better? That's where the $1,500 Acer R13 comes in. Featuring a screen that swivels into multiple modes, a powerful Intel Core i7 CPU and supersonic dual 256GB SSDs, the R13 delivers better performance than its competition in a fairly portable package. While its looks don't match its brawn, Acer's multimode 2-in-1 ticks a lot of boxes needed for a satisfying hybrid device.

Most companies have settled on 360-degree flip displays or detachable screens, but on the R13, Acer chose to go with a third option.

The R13 uses a floating frame to hold the screen, which allows the display to open and tilt like a traditional laptop while also letting it spin in place for tablet mode.

This gives the R13 additional modes not seen on other designs, such as an "Ezel" mode, where the screen floats above the keyboard, and a low-angle stand mode that's perfect for tight spaces or use in bed. You'll also find the usual notebook, tablet and tent modes.

This design comes with a few trade-offs, though. The bezels on the R13's screen are thick and fat, especially along the bottom. At a time when we're seeing edge-to-edge displays on laptops and smartphones, the layered black borders around the display make the R13 look clunky and dated. Another problem is that, unlike other 2-in-1s, there's no touch Start button on the front of the screen for tablet mode, making you reliant on the side-swipe gesture to go back to the Modern UI home screen. Lastly, because the plastic floating frame extends only halfway up the side of the display when closed, the R13 is a sea of right angles and raised edges, lending it a somewhat unfinished appearance.

While the Yoga 3 Pro pushes the design envelope of 2-in-1s with its strikingly slim frame, Acer's R13 focuses more on speed. The R13's combination of an Intel Core i7 CPU, 8GB of RAM and lightning-fast dual SSDs gives it a significant edge in power compared to Lenovo's flagship 2-in-1. You also get a lighter, more portable design than the Toshiba Click 2 Pro, which offers similar specs but a heavy detachable screen. And let's not forget that the Acer's battery outlasts them both. The R13 isn't the prettiest or the lightest 2-in-1, but if you prefer speed to looks in your convertible, Acer strikes the right balance.

Acer offers a wide range of laptops that stand out more for their value than for their ingenuity. Most of the products we reviewed were good, but not great. This year, the company rose from last place to eighth, mostly because of its competitors' weaknesses rather than Acer's strengths. The brand continues to be held back by a combination of ho-hum systems, poor support and bland design.

Acer opts for textured plastics in most of its designs, including the Aspire One Cloudbook, the Chromebook 15 and the Aspire V15 Nitro Black Edition. And when we finally got an aluminum chassis (Aspire R14 and Chromebook R11), it was handsome, but didn't really turn heads. The worst aesthetic offender was the Aspire Switch 10 E, whose chassis we described as "cat-vomit puce."

Our favorite Acer design is the Aspire R13 with adapter such as Acer Aspire One 521 AC Adapter, Acer Aspire One 533 AC Adapter, Acer Ferrari One 200 AC Adapter, Acer Aspire One D260 AC Adapter, Acer Aspire One D255 AC Adapter, Acer Aspire One 751h AC Adapter, Acer Aspire 5252 AC Adapter, Acer Aspire One 532h AC Adapter, Acer Aspire 5920 AC Adapter, Acer ADP-120ZB BB AC Adapter, Acer Aspire One ZG5 AC Adapter, Acer Aspire AS1410 AC Adapter, which has a novel floating frame that redefines the 2-in-1 flip design. We also like the Predator 17 gaming notebook, which has sharp angles, a soft-touch finish and dual LED strips on the lid. The premium S7 Ultrabook stands out with its glass lid, but as of this writing, it hasn't been updated to the latest Intel 6th-Generation Skylake processor.

With a massive portfolio, Acer has a laptop for every budget and need. The company covers the low-end market with its inexpensive Chromebooks and stripped-down Windows systems such as the Cloudbook 14, offers plenty of mainstream laptops in its Aspire E and F series, and hits the premium Ultrabook market with its super-svelte Aspire S7. No stranger to the growing 2-in-1 market, Acer also offers both the Aspire R series of bend-back hybrids and the Aspire Switch line of 10- to 12-inch detachables. The Taiwanese tech giant also addresses the premium gaming segment with its Aspire V Nitro and Predator lines and businesses with its TravelMate line of productivity-minded portables.

While everyone loves value, few people want a product that looks cheap. Acer should put more effort into making premium and innovative products. The company would also benefit from a stronger support presence on social media and a warranty policy that pays for return shipping.

Many tests, such as Diffusing Capacity and Spirometry may be performed at rest, during exercise, and simultaneously with other measurements. For example: you may wish to conduct an exercise gas exchange test and simultaneously perform a Diffusing Capacity test on your cardiac patient.

Vmax Spectra Mass Flow Sensor technology raises the standard again, with the addition of Real-Time BTPS Correction and Dynamic Kelvin Sensing.Unlike traditional spirometers and flow sensing devices which must rely on a static BTPS correction factor, the Vmax Spectra's flow sensor accurately reads gas temperature as well as molar mass at 8 millisecond intervals and corrects the sample flow and volume instantly. This breakthrough in mass flow science ensures accurate measurements with any inhaled and exhaled gas cooling profile, even if the room temperature has changed after calibration or during the test itself.

Dynamic Kelvin Sensing electronically links the sensor at the mouth to the integrated circuit processing the data. This technology eliminates the effects of spurious electrical resistance artifacts, which can distort the signal for sampling mass flow.
